Of all the worship to our beloved goddess, kumkumarchana is considered to be highly superior and this laksha kumkumarchane pooja is done to our beloved goddess from the age old times. It is done in the month named Jestha according to the Hindu calendar during the waxing phase of the moon, on a Friday. This pooja is performed to our goddess, once in a year and is considered to be a significant one.

With the Vedic hymns being recited by the priests sitting in various places like the front hall (Mukha mantapa, a small pavilion or porch constructed in front of the doorway of the temple), Okuli katte (A place where a crimsoned turmeric water is sprinkled on persons on festival days) and the main priest sitting inside the sanctum, together, a total of 18 Priests shall recite Lalitha sahasranama namavali 6 times and perform the laksha kumkumarchane.

By chanting, each names of the goddess from Lalitha sahasranama namavali, kumkum or vermillion is offered to goddess. 18 priests together chant the 1000 names as said in the Lalitha sahasranama namavali for 6 times, this making the count to 1Lakh. The vermillion is then collected together in a silver plate and is offered to the divine feet of our beloved goddess. Later, Dhoop, Deepam, Tambulam, Dakshina, Arghyam, Niranjanam and Naivedyam, Pushpanjali and Namaskaaraams are offered to her divine feet. Mahapooja shall be performed to the goddess by offering her all these 16 items called as shodashopachara pooja.

Our Dear Mangalamma likes archana being done to her. Vermillion that represents auspiciousness shall be offered to our beloved goddess by chanting each names as told in the Lalitha sahasranama namavali. Various Vedic hymns that are very dear to our beloved goddess shall also be recited on this occasion. Keeping the image of our beloved goddess in our heart and mind, prostrating ourselves to her divine feet, after chanting the each names from the Lalitha sahasranama namavali, kumkum will be offered to the Sri chakra placed below her divine feet while holding the hands in dhenu mudra.

From the divine feet of the goddess who can be seen sitting in a padmasana posture till her head, with unified mind, elevating the power of Sri Chakra by the chants of various divine mantras, goddess shall be worshipped in the form of saffron. Thus, laksha kumkumarchane shall be offered to the divine feet of our beloved goddess, tomorrow.

Our beloved Goddess, who is saubhagyavati, can be seen wearing a kumkum in her forehead having the mixture of turmeric and saffron (Haridra kumkum), glowing magnificently like a lamp shall be pleased with the kumkumarchana done to her. This kumkum, that has been offered to our beloved goddess, shall then be given to the devotees as prasadams.

Lalitha sahasranama shall begin with the name ‘Sri Matha’ and shall end with ‘Sri lalithambika’. The meaning of the word Lalitha is someone who is very elegant. In Padma puranam, Lalitha is described as ‘lokaanatitya lalithe lalitha’ meaning, one who is the elegant custodian of this whole world. Jagat janani is none other the Lalitha maata.

In the puranas, it is said that, goddess evolved from the performance of chandika yagam by the devathas for the well being of this world.
To appease the goddess, who originated from the chandika yagam, the devathas along with shiva, Vishnu and Hari used to chants these namavali told in Lalitha sahasranama.
